For the second straight week, an Avon Brave is a Section V Class D Football Player of the Week! Chris T. earned this week’s offensive honors as the senior quarterback went 5/9 passing for 109 yards and 2 TDs while also rushing for 112 yards on 6 carries - 2 of which went for TDs - in Avon’s 35-6 win over Geneseo/Mount Morris this past weekend. We hope you’ll join us in congratulating junior Emma D., who was recently selected as an alternate for the New York State School Music Association’s All-State Mixed Choir! Last school year, Emma auditioned along with thousands of other student musicians as part of NYSSMA’s Solo Festival process in the hopes of being selected for an honors ensemble. Her selection as an alternate for this prestigious vocal ensemble is all the more impressive considering she competed against the best student musicians across the entire state! This year's All-State ensembles will perform at NYSSMA’s Winter Conference, which takes place in Rochester from Nov. 30 to Dec. 4. Congratulations Emma!

Our boys and girls varsity cross country teams both placed among the top 10 at the John Izzo Invitational at Letchworth State Park this weekend in a preview of the course they’ll run for the Section V Championships in November. In addition to their high overall team finishes, several runners put up personal record times. Our girls team was led by sophomore Maria G. who had a breakout performance to place third overall with a time of 20:03.6. Senior Kaitlyn G. (22:30.8) crossed the finish line second for the Braves while junior Paige P. had her best race of the season (25:07.5) to take 60th overall. Our girls team placed seventh overall out of 21 schools competing. "The girls team took a big step forward today setting multiple season bests and PRs,” said Head Coach Josh Williams. “It's the first time in a while we have defeated Dansville in a meet and it's a benchmark they rightfully deserve to be proud of." For our boys team, junior Finn S. placed eighth overall with a time of 17:26.6, breaking the 18-minute mark for the first time by nearly 34 seconds! In his first season of cross country, junior Hunter R. was the second Brave across the finish line with a time of 19:34.3, good for 48th place overall. Sage P., likewise a first-year cross country team member, finished third for the Braves and 75th overall with a time of 20:37.8. The boys team placed ninth out of 24 competing teams. "The boys are coming together as a team and are shocking the league with their times but not their coach,” said Williams. “I couldn't be more proud of our runners on the day." We had 14 local colleges and universities kind enough to send representatives to Avon this morning for our Rochester Area College Fair! Seniors and juniors headed down to the cafeteria this morning to speak with representatives, learn more about their post-graduation higher education options and, let’s be honest, get a bit of that free merch… A huge thank you to all our participating colleges and universities - our students learned a lot! • Rochester Institute of Technology • SUNY Geneseo • Alfred University • St. John Fisher University • SUNY Brockport • Finger Lakes Community College • Houghton University • Keuka College • Monroe Community College • Genesee Community College • Nazareth University • Alfred State College • University of Rochester • Roberts Wesleyan College

A huge shout out to head football coach Andy Englert, who was just named the Buffalo Bills ADPRO Sports Rochester Region Coach of the Week! Englert led our varsity football team to the 13-6 win over Oakfield-Alabama/Elba this past weekend to move to 2-1 on the season. This is the second straight football season Englert’s been presented with Coach of the Week honors. He was recognized last September following Avon’s 26-6 thumping of Caledonia-Mumford-Byron Bergen. Click on the link below to read more about Englert’s Coach of the Week selection. Englert’s award comes with a $1,000 donation to Avon’s football program. Congratulations, Coach Englert! What a day! Members of our freshman class got their high school careers off on the right foot last week as they traveled to Camp Stella Maris on the shores of Conesus Lake for a day full of communication, cooperation and camaraderie. After arriving at camp, students broke up into groups, then rotated through different stations featuring activities designed to test their ability to work together to solve a common problem. High School Counselor Elizabeth Cooke, who organized the field trip along with fellow freshman class co-advisor Emily Schroeder, said their hope was to create an opportunity for students to come together, build connections and have some fun outside of school. “I think it was great, the kids loved it. They kept saying ‘Can we just do this every week?’” Cooke said. “You definitely saw a shift towards the end of the day where the kids were really connecting with each other which was what we wanted. That was our whole goal, so it was awesome. Can’t wait to do it again.” A huge thank you to Camp Stella Maris and counselors Grace, Lucy, Lauren and Rachel, who guided our students through each station, for hosting us - we can’t wait for our next visit!

We hope you’ll join us in congratulating the five members of our staff who were granted tenure at last night’s Board of Education meeting. They are Kaitlyn Altamura Carvajal (English language learner teacher) Mallory Long (middle school Spanish), Ashley McCann (middle school English), Geoffrey Carvill (third grade) and Alexe Dunham (high school social studies). These five teachers have proven their expertise and skill over a period of several years and we hope they’ll continue to serve our students and call Avon Central Schools home for years to come!

Our cross country athletes made the most of their one and only home meet of the season yesterday as our boys team swept the meet with wins over Bath Haverling, Pembroke and Alexander while our girls team split, losing to Bath Haverling but defeating Pembroke and Alexander. Junior Finn S. ran an 18:06.00 while teammate Jordan M., also a junior, ran an 18:13.00 to take first and second place, respectively. On the girls side, sophomore Maria G. captured first with a time of 21:07 while senior Kaitlyn G. ran a 22:55.00 - fast enough for fourth place. "Our hard work has us started out on the right track," said Head Coach Josh WIlliams. "Now that we have our first meet behind us, we’re at the fork in the road. Are we content with our results or do we increase the effort and level-up?” Tuesday’s meet was also senior night and senior athletes Chris H., Abby W. and Kaitlyn G. were recognized. On this day in 1945, at around 9:04 a.m. local time, Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijirō Umezu signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay and, in so doing, brought World War II to an official end. The National World War II Museum in New Orleans estimates more than 400,000 Americans died fighting in the war. Eight attended Avon Central Schools. A memorial outside the entrance to our Middle School recognizes the sacrifice of these eight valiants, “who gave the last full measure of devotion to their country.” Today, 78 years later on VJ day, we remember these eight men: • Sidney Archibald • Frank DeFranco • Donald Gilbert • Carl Ippolito • Clarence Meekin • Augustus Miller • Frederick Moran • James Moran

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been putting together our district’s first ever State of the School publication and we’re excited to share the finished product with you! The impetus behind this new publication stems from some interested community members who’ve asked for additional information about our district’s operations, information not typically covered in our newsletter, budget information or social media posts. To help address these requests, we prepared a State of the School to provide some additional context to the District as a whole. Keep an eye out for our new publication in this weekend’s edition of the Genesee Valley Penny Saver or click on the link below to read it on our website.
