Welcome to the Homeschool webpage for the Avon Central School District.  Here you can find helpful information regarding the NYS Home Instruction requirements, laws and regulations, resources, and proper procedures. On the right, you can find copies of the Homeschool Handbook as well as templates of documents required throughout the duration of the academic year.

Please follow the procedures below if you intend to homeschool your child(ren):

  1. Mail your Letter of Intent (LOI) to Homeschool to the Homeschool Coordinator at;
    Christina Ecklund, Director of Academic Programs, 191 Clinton Street, Avon, NY  14414
    or email aherzog@avoncsd.org. This letter MUST include the child(ren)'s name, date of birth, and grade level for the current year.

  2. Following the submission of the LOI, your child(ren)'s Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP) and Annual Plan for Instruction and Evaluation (APIE) must be submitted to the District by August 15th of the upcoming academic year. The IHIP must provide the dates you intend to submit your child(ren)'s Quarterly Reports. It is expected that you send in the reports as closely to the dates indicated on the IHIP.  Quarterly Reports are due four times during the school year; typically, November, January, April, and June.

  3. Each year, New York State requires students to take an Annual Assessment to determine their progress throughout the year.  Your choice of Annual Assessment for your child(ren) is required by the submission of their 3rd Quarterly Report. Per the Commissioner's Regulation for Home Instruction 100.10 subdivisions (h)(i), the test shall be selected by the parent from one of the following:

    • IOWA test of Basic Skills

    • California Achievement Test (CAT)

    • Stanford Achievement Test

    • Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills

    • Metropolitan Achievement Test

    • A State Education Department Test

    • Another test approved by the State Education Department or an alternative form of evaluation such as a narrative of the student's progress
