Our varsity girls basketball team put together a pair of wins over Winter Recess to win Avon’s Holiday Tournament.

In its opening round game against Clyde-Savannah Dec. 28, the Braves put up an early lead only to surrender it back to Clyde-Savannah, which led by one at the half.

Both teams dealt with foul trouble throughout the second half, but a seven-point fourth quarter and control down the stretch by senior center Sarina M. sealed the 46-43 win for Avon.

Sarina led the stat line for the Braves with 18 points, 3 assists, 10 rebounds, 5 blocks and 4 steals. Senior guard Ella D. had 9 points and 6 rebounds and freshman guard Maria G. had 8 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds.

In the championship game the following day, the Braves held Central Square to 1 point in the first quarter and never looked back. Strong defense pushed them to a 21-14 lead at the half and a strong 3rd quarter moved it to 34-21 in favor of Avon.

The lead got close to 20 before Central Square dug back in with four, fourth quarter 3s.  Avon’s lead shrunk to 10 and stayed that way with back and forth buckets until the final buzzer.

Sarina M. again led in scoring, putting up 30 points in Avon’s 49-39 win. Senior guard and captain Kennedy F. put up 10 points while junior forward Maggie V. grabbed 18 boards in the contest.

The Braves now stand at 5-3 on the season and will next play tonight, Jan. 4, at Caledonia-Mumford.
