Sports roundup: Avon Central School District logo

Students may have been on winter break over the past several days, but there was no rest for Avon’s student athletes, many of whom competed this past week.

Below is a roundup of Avon athletics action:

Swimming and Diving

The Braves traveled to York Dec. 23 and won 10 of 12 events en route to a 105-70 win over York-Pavilion. Joleigh C. (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke) and Ian G. (50 free, 100 free) won multiple events for the Braves, who remain undefeated at 6-0. Avon’s next meet is Jan. 4 at Canandaigua.

Girls Basketball

The junior varsity and varsity teams competed Dec. 28 and 29 as part of the Avon Christmas Tournament, which suffered a few last-minute, coronavirus-related team withdrawals.

The JV team lost to Central Square 15-45 Dec. 28, then rebounded with a 51-14 win over Clyde-Savannah the following day. The varsity team also lost to Central Square, 27-49 and then lost a close game to Clyde-Savannah, 32-35. The girls JV and varsity basketball teams’ next games are Jan. 5 at Caledonia-Mumford.

Ice Hockey

The Geneseo-Livonia-Avon Lakers traveled to East Aurora Dec. 30 to take on the Chiefs of the Iroquois Central School District. The Lakers lost 3-11, and fell to 0-8 on the season. The Lakers’ next game is Jan. 4 against the WFL Panthers at the Geneva Recreation Ice Arena.
