Positive Cases

We send this communication to pass along information about COVID cases this week at Avon.  Over the course of the week, we have been made aware of the following positives: two Grade 2 students in separate classrooms.  These cases do not appear to be connected.   We also learned of a Grade 6 student who tested positive.  After contact tracing, the class was moved to remote instruction.  However, just this evening we learned that a second student in the class tested positive while in the precautionary quarantine.  We are working with the LCDOH to further review these cases.  The Middle School will be making additional contact with the impacted families.

At Avon High School, the following cases were reported: a Grade 9 student, and two Grade 12 students.  For these cases, contact tracing was completed and the close contacts have been notified.  These individuals have entered a precautionary quarantine.

Please Note: There has been an increase in student positives at Avon this month.  We are looking into the sixth grade cases.  Regionally speaking, it remains that the vast majority of these cases appear to be the result of contact in family and social settings.  This is something that we will continue to monitor closely.

Case Counts and Vaccine for Phases 1A and 1B

It appears that case counts in Livingston County are declining.  The seven day average is 8.2% and yesterday’s positivity rate was 5.4%.  Some of this decline is attributed to the idea that many fewer tests were administered.  Many health departments, LCDOH included, are shifting attention to the rollout of vaccines to persons in Phases 1A and 1B.  Regionally, the rollout got off to a shaky start, but the plans appear to be solidifying.  Avon partnered with other Livingston County Schools and the LCDOH to develop an equitable solution to schedule vaccinations for persons in Phases 1A and 1B.

County, Community, and School Cases

As you know, COVID-19 symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19: fever, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, cough, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, vomiting, or diarrhea. Still others have no symptoms at all.  The virus that causes COVID-19 is thought to spread from person to person, mainly through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Spread is more likely when people are in close contact with one another (within 6 feet).

We appreciate all of our families and staff that continue to monitor their health by completing the required temperature checks and health screening.  We also appreciate the cooperation of our students, families, and staff members with the additional safety practices in place within our school buildings.  If your child develops any of the above symptoms, please keep him or her at home, contact your child’s school health office as well as your healthcare provider.  If your child’s doctor suspects your child has COVID-19, he/she should be tested for COVID-19 and stay home from school until negative results are received and the school has notified you that your child may return to school. Your physician can order COVID-19 testing.  In some cases, the school can also help facilitate a COVID test.
