Congratulations are due our very own Rebecca Rio, who was recently selected by Chapter 5 of the New York State Athletic Administrators Association as the 2023 recipient of the Judith A. Martens Secretarial Award of Excellence.

The award is given annually to an athletic director secretary who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to student athletes at the local level for a minimum of five years.

“Your professionalism and support of the student-athletes in Section V has been noticed and greatly appreciated,” wrote Brian Donohue, awards chairperson of NYSAAA’s Chapter 5, in a letter announcing Rio’s reception of the award.

Awardees are chosen based on a vote of the more than 100 athletics directors in Section V

Rio will be presented with her award May 22 at Chapter 5’s annual Dennis E. Fries Awards Banquet at the Genesee River Restaurant in Mount Morris.

“Rebecca has a true passion for and dedication to our student athletes here at Avon and I really can't think of a person more deserving of this award,” said Avon Athletic Director Andy Englert. “I think one of her greatest strengths is her ability to problem solve when unexpected situations arise and when you’re coordinating a dozen sports and hundreds of student athletes, that tends to happen pretty often. We’re all lucky to have her here in Avon.”
