The English as a Second Language Program (ESL) helps Limited English Proficient (LEP) students listen, speak, read and write English.  In order to be eligible for the educational program the parent/guardian of the child(ren) must complete the Home Language Questionnaire form to be reviewed by the ESL Teacher to distinguish if further testing is needed.  If the child requires additional testing, the ESL teacher will administer the NYSITELL to see if the child qualifies for the ESL services.  Once the assessment has been scored the parent/guardian will receive confirmation of the test results.

If the student is recommended to receive ESL services, the ESL teacher will determine how often they will see the student during the school year.  The duty of the ESL teacher is to educate the student on how to listen, speak, read and write better English and work towards becoming English Proficient. 

Once a year, usually around the same time as the NYS Assessments in the spring, the LEP student(s) will take the NYSESLAT (New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test) to determine the student's ability to listen, speak, read and write in English.  Based on the results, student's English language proficiency level is classified as beginning, intermediate, advanced or proficient.  To be removed from the LEP status, the student must score at the proficient level in both the Listening/Speaking and Reading/Writing components.
