We had the PERFECT day Saturday for the Special Olympics of New York’s Super Regional Track and Field Competition. About 200 athletes from more than a dozen local clubs made the trip to Avon this year to compete in traditional and modified track and field events and make memories with fellow athletes. This is the second straight year we’ve hosted this event here in Avon and we were so excited to help create such a special and rewarding day for all our participating athletes. A huge thank you to all our volunteers and to senior Destiny P. for capturing all these great shots!

We were happy to play host to New York Times best-selling author Janae Marks today at Avon Central Schools. The author of “From the Desk of Zoe Washington,” “On Air With Zoe Washington” and “A Soft Place to Land,” Marks spoke with our fourth, fifth and sixth graders about her path to becoming a published author and her writing process. Marks also led a workshop on how to create authentic and compelling characters, giving students some tips on how to harness things like background, motivation and conflict to make characters readers are interested in learning more about. Thank you, Janae, for spending some time with us today and for signing so many autographs for our students - we hope your hand isn’t TOO sore!

Our teachers have been feeling the love from the Avon Braves PTA all week for Teacher Appreciation Week. PTA members have been spoiling our teachers each day with pizza, coffee, cookies, donuts and other treats. Today, they left packs of gum in our faculty rooms! We’re lucky to have such a supportive community that recognizes just how incredible our teachers are! Thank you, PTA!

Give it up for fourth grader Maura S. and second grader Oliver C. - our Elementary School Music Students of the Month for April! Each month, Music Teacher Mrs. Kaylee Corell picks two students of the month - one from third and fourth grade and one from first and second grade. Students are chosen based on how frequently they make Corell’s “Wall of Fame” for things like playing or singing a song well, answering a difficult music question correctly or displaying exceptional behavior and focus. Congratulations to Maura and Oliver - keep up the good work!

Yesterday was Decision Day here at Avon High School and with that, and there only being 52 days left to go until graduation, it seemed like a good time to take a beat and recognize our seniors - many of whom will be attending college next year - for all they’ve done here at Avon and all that’s still ahead of them.

Shout out to our two Livingston County Teen Recognition Award winners - Sydney M. and Destiny P.! The Livingston County Youth Bureau gives the awards annually to high school seniors who have had a positive influence on their community through their service participation, volunteering and good deeds. In the nomination they submitted on her behalf, High School Counselor Elizabeth Cooke-Migliore and Interact Club Advisor Karen Vanderbilt described Sydney as embodying “everything Avon represents and more.” “She has a genuine interest in volunteering and taking on leadership roles in school and in her community,” they wrote. “...Sydney is not afraid to put herself out there and to achieve her set goals. She passionately speaks about how she loves volunteering and is proud of her outgoing personality. Being a leader comes very naturally to Sydney as she takes the role seriously and gives it her all… Sydney will no doubt continue to inspire and motivate long after high school with her determination, positivity, and hardworking attitude.” In the nomination she submitted on Destiny’s behalf, Cooke-Migliore described her as “triumphant, determined, and amazing.” “Her bubbly personality, optimistic outlook, and genuine personality make her easy to talk to; she is truly a very special person. Destiny has overcome many challenges in her short life, but, despite all of it, she wakes up every day and works hard to make herself happy and be the best she can be,” Cooke-Migliore wrote. “...Destiny is just an overall wonderful young lady who is going to be sorely missed next year. She is loved by her teachers and peers, can always be counted on to help out, and cracks a quick joke just when you need a laugh.” Sydney, Destiny and their fellow awardees from across the county were recognized at an April 26 ceremony at the Willow Creek Venue in Livonia.

We’re proud to announce senior Sydney M. is the recipient of Section V’s Winter 2022-23 Student-Athlete Scholarship! Scholarship winners are selected based on a letter of recommendation from their coach, their high school transcript and activities sheet, as well as their responses to application questions. Section V awards one scholarship to one athlete in each sport, each season. There were approximately 70 applications for this season’s scholarships, making it a very competitive selection process. Sydney received the $250 scholarship competing as a diver on Avon’s varsity swimming and diving team. Congratulations, Sydney!
