Today, members of our freshman class participated in their second Braves Academy of the year. Students rotated through four different stations led by different members of our high school faculty and staff. Principal Ryan Wagner and School Resource Officer Matt McFadden spoke with students about high school expectations while counselors Amanda Palmer and Liz Cooke talked about academic pathways and students’ different post-graduation options. In the library, Rebecca Rio and Suzanne Freeman led groups of students in circles, a type of restorative practices used to foster a climate of trust and support among a group of peers, and in the cafeteria, Sarah Dziekonski and Lucy Delaney helped the freshman class create a banner for this afternoon’s pep assembly.

We’re thrilled to announce our first Elementary School Music Students of the Month of the new school year! Each month, Music Teacher Mrs. Kaylee Corell picks two students of the month - one from third and fourth grade and one from first and second grade. Students are chosen based on how frequently they make Corell’s “Wall of Fame” for things like playing or singing a song well, answering a difficult music question correctly or displaying exceptional behavior and focus. Congratulations to our Music Students of the Month for September - third grader Nora P. and second graders Olivia M. Keep up the good work, ladies!

Third graders have been studying continents, oceans and landforms in class and this afternoon, we caught them putting their newfound knowledge to work making their very own globes using pumpkins, stencils and paint. Yesterday, students painted their pumpkins blue to represent oceans. Today, they outlined continents and painted them green and tomorrow, they’ll finish their globes off by painting Antarctica white. Many thanks to Tom Ellingham, Melissa Stanton and Geoffrey Carvill for letting us stop by and snap some photos!

Our boys and girls cross country squads swept their league meets in Holley Tuesday, defeating host Holley, Kendall and Livonia. Avon's top five boys on the day were Finn S., Jordan M., Hunter R., Corey D. and Wyatt K. It was a must win situation for the boys as they now move into first place in their division with an overall record of 14-1. "Livonia's program success speaks for itself," said Head Coach Josh Williams. "We knew we had to run a strategic race in order to compete and everyone on the roster stepped up. This was a massive team win with a critical race next week." Hunter R. and Corey D. ran courageously, breaking up a pack of Livonia runners that gave Avon the ultimate edge. In the girls race, Maria G. earned her third win of the season as the Braves moved to 10-5 on the season. Kaitlyn G., Paige P., Abby W., and Lena K. rounded out the Braves’ top five finishers. "The girls had some misfortune earlier in the season with some injuries and illness," said Williams. "They have weathered the storm and are looking to break through at the perfect time of the year. They keep hanging in there, maintaining a positive attitude and building trust in each other." The Braves will travel to Oakfield-Alabama next Tuesday, Oct. 17 for a multi-district meet against Oakfield-Alabama/Elba, Geneseo, Pavilion/York, Warsaw and Mount Morris.

Did you know that in the first month of school, our food service staff has served 2,226 breakfasts and 9,556 lunches to students? That comes to 101 breakfasts and 434 lunches each and every day. By the time seniors graduate in June 2024, our food service department will have dished out more than 97,000 meals! By ensuring students have access to nutritious and delicious food while at school, our food service staff put them in the best possible position to learn. Today, for National School Lunch Week, we recognize this absolutely astounding achievement and the men and women of our food service department who make it possible. Thank you!

Students, staff and our SRO, Officer Matthew McFadden of the Avon Police Department, assembled in the High School Library for National Coffee with a Cop Day. Those in attendance enjoyed coffee, cider, donut holes, cookies and of course some good conversation. Coffee with a Cop events serve as an opportunity for members of law enforcement and the communities they serve to come together, learn about each other and create relationships. Thank you, Officer McFadden, for all you do!

The Avon Braves traveled to Le Roy yesterday to face the host, Notre Dame Batavia and Keshequa. Our boys team swept the meet while our girls team went 2-1, falling to Le Roy by 1 point. "Through the heat both the boys and girls grinded out some wins tonight," said Head Coach Josh Williams. "Quite a few of our runners are hitting some times they didn't think possible at the beginning of season. They are truly an incredible group." Junior Finn S. won his third league meet of the year with a time of 18:59. Freshman Wyatt K. had a strong showing as well for the boys placing 11th overall with a time of 21:27. The girls were led by Sophomore Maria G., who won her second league meet of the season with a time of 21:04. Lena K., a junior, turned in a gutsy performance, running through an injury from the day prior to end up as the third Brave across the finish line. The Braves are next in action next Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Holley where they’ll take on their host, Livonia and Kendall in a critical, divisional matchup. (Photos courtesy of Josh Williams)

Five of our varsity cross country runners brought home top 100 honors from the prestigious McQuaid Invitational Saturday at Genesee Valley Park. In the girls varsity small school race, sophomore Maria G. placed 21st overall with a time of 19:29.2, improving from the year prior where she ran a 20:55. Junior Paige P. also had a strong race with a time of 23:23.6, a season’s best time by well over a minute. In the boys race, junior Jordan M. placed 49th overall with a time of 17:03.2. A two-sport athlete, Jordan is also a member of our varsity football team and played on both sides of the ball during the Braves’ Sept. 29 game against York/Pavilion the night before. Also having a strong race for the boys was first-year runner Hunter R., a junior, who put up a season’s best time of 18:33.3 Our modified runners captured three ribbons in the 1.6-mile race as seventh graders Owen H. 10:17.7), Quinn K. (11:40.9) and Sarah W. (12:44.0) all placed among the top 100. "We are getting stronger both physically and mentally," said Head Coach Josh Williams. "As a team we are rightfully proud of our performance and progress but, more importantly, are hungry to put in the work to meet our goals for the rest of the season.” (Photos courtesy of Josh WIlliams)

We hope you’ll join us in congratulating junior Emma D., who was recently selected as an alternate for the New York State School Music Association’s All-State Mixed Choir! Last school year, Emma auditioned along with thousands of other student musicians as part of NYSSMA’s Solo Festival process in the hopes of being selected for an honors ensemble. Her selection as an alternate for this prestigious vocal ensemble is all the more impressive considering she competed against the best student musicians across the entire state! This year's All-State ensembles will perform at NYSSMA’s Winter Conference, which takes place in Rochester from Nov. 30 to Dec. 4. Congratulations Emma!
