Parents and guardians interested in entering their child’s name in Avon Central Schools’ universal pre-kindergarten (UPK) lottery for the 2023-24 school year are asked to complete the interest form at the bottom of this article and return it to Avon Elementary School at 131 Clinton St., Avon, by March 15.

Q: What is UPK? 

A: The Avon UPK program offers daily instruction that provides opportunities for children to learn school readiness skills, exercise their minds and bodies and strengthen their ability to work with others. 

Q: Who is eligible? 

A: Your child must reside within the Avon Central School District and must be four years old on or before December 1, 2023 to be eligible for the 2023-24 school year. 

Q: How many days a week is UPK? 

A: UPK classes follow the same schedule as our K-4 students. Classes are Monday through Friday from 9:05 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Q: Is there a cost for UPK? 

A: No.

Q: Is there wrap-around care? 

A: No, the district does not offer before care or after care at our school site. 

Q: Does the district provide transportation? 

A: Yes, students are transported on our school buses. Parents also have the option to self-transport. 

Q: How do I apply so my child will be considered? 

A: At the bottom of this article is an interest form. By printing the form, filling it out and returning it to the Elementary School by March 15, your child will be entered into the district's UPK lottery. 

Q: What happens next? 

A: Once we receive all interest forms back, we will conduct a random lottery. Families will be notified and sent a registration packet to be filled out to be formally enrolled in our UPK. 

Q: What happens if there are more applicants than spots available? 

A: Once available spots have been filled and registrations received, we will put additional names on our wait list. Wait list spots will be managed and families notified if there are any changes to available status.

Q: What is the lottery and registration timeline? 

• March 15: Interest forms due. 

• Mid-April: Lottery is conducted and registration packets will be mailed to those who have secured a spot based on lottery.

• April 27: Registration packets due. 

• Mid-May:UPK information night. 

• End of June: UPK screening.
