Recently, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) announced that all public school districts must stop using Native American names, imagery, logos, and mascots.  This position is largely consistent with the views of the Seneca Nation.  Further, NYSED indicated that potential penalties for districts that continue using such names, logos, imagery, and mascots might include significant measures such as the withholding of state funding and the removal of school officials.

As we begin to further navigate the NYSED directive, we are using ThoughtExchange to allow everyone a chance to share their perspectives and to help our district to understand what’s most important to members of our community.
