The Wildcats went 14-6 through the regular season and earned wins over Rochester Academy Charter School (78-71) and Wellsville (44-33) to book their ticket in the finals. Avon, meanwhile, is 20-1 on the season, its sole loss coming against Lyons back in January. The Braves bested Addison (81-37) in the quarterfinals before battling back against Le Roy in the semifinals to win, 68-64, in overtime. The Braves have gone 3-1 in sectional finals since 2020, their sole loss coming against Northstar Christian in last year’s C1 title game. Friday’s game will be a rematch of the 2021 C1 Championship that the Braves won, 62-56, in overtime. One last shout out from last night’s swim championship. Senior Kaitlyn G. and sophomore Jessie C. both put up times that, had they been competing during girls swim season, would have qualified them for the state championships. Kate took second place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.79, faster than the girls’ state qualifying standard of 1:00.02. Jessie took third place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.30, besting the girls state qualifying standard of 1:00.42 by more than a second. Congrats, ladies!

Head Coach Dan Paganin had a special cheering section last night at the Class D Swimming & Diving Championship! Westley, 8, is a second grader at Avon Elementary School and his little brother, Darwin, 6, is in kindergarten. Both gave dad some encouragement during a break in the action last night!

After 12 events, dozens of swims and a whole lot of anxiety, that’s what separated your Avon Braves and the Gananda Blue Panthers in last night’s Section V Class D Swimming & Diving Championship at Haverling High School. Thankfully, it was the Braves that came away with the brick, besting Gananda 351 points to 342 to earn their second straight sectional swim title! Like last year, the Braves had no individual champions, instead relying on their depth - including two second place finishes, six third place finishes and three fourth place finishes - to capture the team title. Ruben Ornelas, a dancer and choreographer with GLOW Creatives, stopped by the High School yesterday to meet with our Senior Choir about its upcoming performance to celebrate the grand re-opening of the Avon Opera House! “This is a huge deal for the community and for our singers to be a part of,” said Choir Director Kristen Maxfield. “The Opera House has been closed since the late 1960s. The reopening will be the first time anyone has performed in it since then and our Senior Choir will be a part of history for it. It's pretty cool!” Ornelas, who’s coordinating the Opera House’s re-opening ceremony and performances, stopped by to meet our choir members, talk to them about what to expect the day of their performance and to listen to them prepare their songs. “He was very impressed with how they responded in rehearsal and by their vocal abilities,” said Maxfield. The Avon Opera House’s grand re-opening is Saturday, March 2. While exact performance times have not yet been set, our choir should perform at some point between 2 and 4 p.m. Keep an eye out for more information in the near future! Avon alumna Sarina McDowell (Class of 2023), a freshman forward at Nazareth University, has been named Empire 8 co-Rookie of the Week! Sarina led the Golden Flyers in the two games last week with a scoring average of 18.5 points per game. She scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds in the win over Keuka College and then added 18 points and seven rebounds at Houghton. She missed just three shots in the two games as she finished 15-for-18 (.833) from the field and was 7-for-10 from the free throw line. Congrats, Sarina! Yesterday afternoon, we hosted administrators from surrounding districts for a presentation from Dr. Rick Timbs, a retired school superintendent and school finance expert who assists districts with long-term financial planning. The session was aimed at helping schools to plan given COVID relief funds are coming to an end and New York State has proposed significant changes to school aid that, if approved, would negatively impact all schools in our region. At the end of the session, Dr. Timbs briefly addressed the pending state mandate for schools to purchase zero emissions school buses within the next five years. This was a helpful session for Genesee Valley BOCES superintendents and business officials to gain a deeper understanding of the proposed changes to the school funding formula and its impact on short and long-range financial planning.

Mrs. Emily Schroeder’s freshmen global history students presented the fruits of their international interview projects last week in the High School Library. In addition to learning about foreign nations’ people, culture and history, the purpose of the assignment, said Schroeder, was for students to make personal connections to major events of the 20th century, practice the techniques of conducting personal interviews and collect authentic documents to help them better understand, appreciate and preserve the stories of their interview subjects. Eighth grader James C. punched his ticket to the State Wrestling Championships in Albany later this month after placing 2nd in the Section V State Qualifiers Saturday at SUNY Brockport. James started out the day 2-0 with two technical falls in the quarters and semis to make the Division II 124-lbs finals where he fell via technical fall to 3-time defending Section V Class B1 Champion Chris Noto of Honeoye Falls-Lima. In the consolation finals, James earned the 3-0 decision over Robert Pullen of Waterloo to take 2nd place overall and qualify for the state championships. All four of our divers placed at the Section V Class D Diving Championships Saturday at the Webster Aquatic Center! Leading the way for the Braves was senior Megan M., who took third place in the 11-dive event with 338.60 points. Next for Avon was senior Taylor S., who took 5th with 283.85 points. Our combined Livonia-Geneseo-Avon Lakers indoor track teams competed Saturday at the Rochester Winter Track League Championships at Nazareth University. Our boys put up a bunch of PRs and top 6 finishes en route to a 9th place finish while our girls team scored 83 points and took 2nd overall. “Although we are a merged program, we pull from three small districts which makes this a huge achievement for us,” said Head Coach Jenna Williams. “Last year, the girls team finished second to last in their division with a score of 6 points.
