Plaintiff prevails in 6th grade mock trial
6th graders assembled in our middle school library last week for their annual mock trial activity. This year’s case was a civil action, pitting a landlord against a tenant over the terms of a lease agreement.
“Our plaintiff was a landlord who sued a now former tenant for rent due when they broke the terms of the year-long lease agreement,” explained Mr. Darren Leonard, whose students handled the plaintiff’s side of the case. “The defendant - represented by Mr. Tim Baumer’s students - argued that the condition of the apartment was unlivable which forced her to move out. The plaintiff argued that the tenant was being too particular and that they had, in fact, acted to fix the situation and that perhaps the defendant had moved out for other unrelated reasons.”
This year, we had two juries with members pulled from Mrs. Breed’s and Mrs. Welch’s reading classes. After hearing both sides of the case and heading out of the library to deliberate, both juries found in favor of the plaintiff.
Many thanks to Livingston County Judge Kevin Van Allen for once again presiding over last week’s proceedings!
