Welcome to Avon Central School District!

Avon Central School District is the center of learning for approximately 1,000 students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Located in Northern Livingston County, Avon Central School combines the benefits of a tight-knit rural community with the close proximity of the technological and cultural opportunities of Rochester, New York. Avon lies in the heart of the Genesee Valley, an area of great natural beauty and historical significance. Opportunities for recreation abound - from fishing and boating on the nearby Finger Lakes, to hiking and camping at Letchworth State Park, as well as skiing, golf and equestrian activities. Nearby colleges offer cultural and educational opportunities. Area businesses offer convenient services and light industry provides local employment. At the center of the community is Avon Central School District.

Please see the following information for parents/guardians regarding our policy on Internet-enabled Personal Devices:

How did we arrive at our new policy?

To develop our 2025–2026 Cell Phone Policy, we began by carefully reviewing the new state law, which prohibits the unsanctioned use of internet-enabled devices by students on school grounds throughout the instructional day. In addition to complying with these legal requirements, we gathered input from school districts across New York State and actively engaged our community, students, families, and staff to help shape a policy that reflects our shared values and priorities. We feel the result is a student-centered approach that supports a focused learning environment while ensuring families can stay connected with their children in appropriate ways. Please see the FAQs below for more information.

FAQs

  • Whose idea was this?

New York State passed legislation that bans the use of internet -enabled devices from bell to bell.

    • What if a student needs to contact a parent or guardian?
Students may go to the main office to call a parent or guardian. Additionally, parents are welcome to contact the main office to leave a message for their child.

    • What if there is an emergency?
In the event of an emergency, Avon will follow the procedures outlined in the district safety plan. Students who need to contact a parent or guardian during such situations will be permitted to do so from the main office if it is safe to do so.

    • Why can’t devices be used during lunch?
The use of personal electronic devices during lunch violates New York State law. This policy also supports the school’s efforts to encourage face-to-face social interaction and reduce the potential for negative experiences associated with social media.

    • What if my student has a medical need for their phone (e.g., glucometer)?
Students with documented medical needs may be granted exemptions to the "bell-to-bell" cell phone restriction. This includes students who require phones to manage medical conditions or as outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Accommodations will also be made for students who need devices for language translation purposes.

    • Can students use electronic devices on the bus?
Yes, students are permitted to use personal electronic devices while riding the bus.

    • Can students take their phones to BOCES?
Yes, students attending a BOCES program are allowed to bring their phones with them. They must follow the procedures put in place by their program from arrival to dismissal.
