Hawks set 3 records at Flower City Invitational
Varsity track athlete Emma G. needed only one of the Flower City Invitational’s two days of competition to rewrite Avon’s record books as the eighth grader broke two longstanding school records Saturday at Rush-Henrietta High School.
Emma started things off with the 2,000-meter steeplechase, scoring a second place finish and setting a new school record with a time of 7:34.22, more than 5 seconds faster than the old record of 7:39.28 set by Anna Phillips in 2012.
A few hours later, she finished the 1,500-meter run in 4:56.99. The time was fast enough for fourth place and earned Emma a second school record as she broke the previous record of 5:01.48 set by Phillips in 2013.
But Emma wasn’t the only one to earn a piece of history in Rush-Henrietta.
Our boys sprint medley relay started the two-day invitational off with a bang Friday night as the team of John D. (200-meter leg), Dylan H. (200-meter leg), Luigi M. (400-meter leg) and Francesco M. (800-meter leg) posted a third place finish with a time of 3:49.90, which set a new school record for our boys program.
Luigi returned to Rush-Henrietta Saturday for the 1,600-meter run, posting a 4th place finish to make the podium with a time of 4:37.34.
“These young athletes are legit,” said Head Coach Samantha Walker. “They continue to surprise us every time they get on the track. Watch out Section V because not only does Emma continue to lead Class C2 in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, she’s now in the 4th spot on the leaderboard for all of Section V as an eighth grader. With his performance Saturday, Luigi now owns the top spot in C2 for the 1,600-meter run as a sophomore.”
