From creativity to commerce: Young entrepreneurs shine at ‘River Hawk Marketplace’

Posted Date: 04/01/26 (01:08 PM)

Elementary school students assembled in our cafegymatorium last month for the first ever River Hawk Marketplace!

“Students have been working in teams of three or more to create their own ‘shops,’” explained Lexi McTarnaghan, a counselor in our elementary school. “They were given materials to make items such as bracelets, keychains, bookmarks, origami, cards or whatever they wanted to create with the items provided. Each group also developed a store name and set prices for their products.”

With their inventory and shop signs in tow, students headed to the cafegymatorium to sell their items and shop at other students’ stores.

“Each student had $5 in play money to spend and at the end, each group totaled up their earnings,” said McTarnaghan.

Elementary school teachers and staff hosted the River Hawk Marketplace as part of Self-Confidence Week down at Avon Elementary.

“We did several activities throughout the week that encouraged students to take pride in their work, practice communication skills, and build confidence,” said McTarnaghan. “Having students sell their creations and interact with their peers afforded the perfect opportunity to do just that!”
