During their field trip to the National Warplane Museum last week to see The Moving Wall, a 1/2-sized replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., members of our junior class learned about four U.S. servicemembers who served overseas during the Vietnam War, but never came home.

The four men - Paul R. Fusco, John W. Geary, Edwin F. Upright and Robert P. Sickles - lived in Avon or attended or graduated from Avon Central Schools.

• Paul R. Fusco, who is identified in his senior year book by his middle name, Richard, graduated from Avon Central Schools in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army and was killed on July 16, 1968, in the Vinh Long province. He was 21 years old.

• John W. Geary attended Avon Central Schools through his freshman year of high school in 1961 before moving to Batavia, where he graduated in 1964. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was killed on Sept. 28, 1966 in the Quang Tri province. He was 22 years old.

• Edwin F. Upright attended Avon through his freshman year of high school in 1958 before dropping out to join the U.S. Marine Corps. He earned his high school diploma while in the marines before he was killed on Aug. 3, 1967 in the Quang Tri province. He was 25 years old.

• While he never attended school in Avon, Robert Sickles lived in Avon and graduated from Caledonia-Mumford Central School District in 1966. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was killed on May 9, 1968 in Quang Tri province. He was 21 years old.
