Rising seniors join Board of Education as student reps
Our Board of Education welcomed two new members recently as rising seniors Maria G. and Lauren H. were sworn in as ex-officio student representatives at the Board’s August 11 meeting.
Per a newly passed bill, every school district and BOCES board in New York State is now required to have at least one ex-officio student representative.
Student board members are not empowered to vote or attend executive sessions, but they will attend regular meetings and are encouraged to voice their thoughts and insights on the varied topics that come before the Board. The students will also sit on the Board’s Audit & Finance Committee.
Also joining the Audit & Finance Committee will be Avon community member Howard Forsythe. The idea to expand the committee to include a community representative came about through discussions around the State Comptroller’s Report from last fall.
Mr. Forsythe, former school business official for the York Central School District for over 30 years, met the desired qualifications for a member well-versed in school finance matters and who can offer guidance and provide valuable insight.
Audit & Finance Committee meetings are conducted prior to Board of Education meetings periodically throughout the year.
In the coming weeks the District will also be forming a stakeholder committee as part of its planning for the next facilities project. This Avon Finance & Facilities Team will be co-chaired by High School Principal Ryan Wagner and Avon Business Official Kristen Murphy. Additional information about this team will be shared in the coming weeks.
