Student artists seek inspiration at Highland Park

Posted Date: 10/26/26 (03:27 PM)

Students in Mrs. Elizabeth Patteson’s drawing class and Mrs. Danielle Howard’s photography class headed to Rochester’s Highland Park last week to take in some inspiration.

Patteson’s drawing students have been working on drawing from observation. Based on the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards, students have been learning techniques to help them draw difficult objects by attempting to bypass the dominant, analytical left hemisphere and tap into the visual, spatial right hemisphere of the brain. Students used their newly acquired observational drawing skills to sketch what they were seeing inside Highland’s Lamberton Conservatory.

Howard’s students captured photographs emphasizing the elements and principles of photography. These elements serve as guidelines that photographers rely on to create an impactful composition.
