Crossing guard recognized for protecting students during traffic collision
Stephanie Lincourt, a crossing guard with the village of Avon, was recognized last week at our Board of Education meeting for her quick actions to ensure our students’ safety during a motor vehicle accident in October.
Lincourt was stationed at the corner of East Main Street and Lacy Street the afternoon of Oct. 30 and headed to the center of the crosswalk to stop traffic so a group of waiting students on their way home after school could cross the street.
A white SUV immediately stopped in response to Lincourt’s commands but a garbage truck failed to do so, side-swiping the SUV and blowing through the crosswalk at significant speed.
Lincourt responded immediately, running back to the sidewalk to ensure our students waiting on the side of the road to cross the street remained far away from the speeding garbage truck and away from danger.
In recognition of her actions, members of our board presented Lincourt with a certificate of appreciation at their Nov. 24 meeting.
“Your awareness and swift response in a potentially dangerous situation protected yourself and others from what could have been a tragic accident in the crosswalk,” reads the certificate. “Your bravery, commitment, and care for the students of Avon exemplify the best of community spirit and heroism.”
We are incredibly grateful for Stephanie, her quick thinking and her quick action to avoid what could have been a terrible outcome.
Our community is lucky to have you!
