Homework assignments are used to help students improve their understanding of ideas and topics presented in class. This experience will help them develop initiative, self-discipline, responsibility, and independence. Homework can be a vehicle through which teacher expectations, student progress, and the school's curriculum are shared with parents. A special quiet time and place set aside each evening for schoolwork or reading for the entire family encourages good study habits. At Avon Primary School a typical homework time is 10-15 minutes per grade level. For example, third graders could expect thirty to forty minutes per night. Creating consistent routines for your child will assist with homework completion. Several suggestions include: -
Create a regular place for them to do their homework each night. This special place should be free from distraction and provide plenty of elbow room. A child's bedroom can be difficult for some students. Often times a kitchen or dining room table are ideal. -
Make sure they have all the materials necessary to get the tasks completed. A child who has to get up every other minute to look for a piece of paper, pen, crayons, or tape will be unable to focus properly on their school work. You can create a homework tool box that could include everything imaginable to get their assignments completed. -
You should create a regular homework time. Children do well when you provide predictable routines for them. Some children do well right when they get off the bus, while others may need some time to unwind from a busy day. Have a discussion with your child about what time would be best for them and then stick to it. If the homework time is thirty minutes in length, have your child sit for the entire thirty minutes. If they say they do not have homework, they can always read a good book. By doing this consistently, it assists children with putting forth their best effort, as a rush to complete their assignments will not result in getting to their favorite video game or television show any faster. -
The homework time is an independent work period. This time period is quiet. During this period of time the child should do what they can do on their own. The homework that is assigned is typically work that they can complete independently. If they do encounter difficulty, they can wait until the designated homework time is over to ask for assistance. Reminding yourself that this is your child's homework is important. In the meantime, they can move on to another assignment or read quietly. Helping create independent work behaviors for your child is important to their future success. -
Students in grades three and four receive a student agenda at the beginning of the year. You should check the agenda each night and have a brief discussion, before homework time, as to what they will be accomplishing. Setting goals during homework time is a good idea.
